Question: Hi Kat, tell us a little about yourself (where did you grow up? where do you live now? family? Jobs? What brought you to Albany, etc).
Kat: Hi Guys, super excited to start working with you. I am from San Cristobal, it is a small town in the region of The Andes in Venezuela. I grew up there with all my family. I have one sister older than me and I am really close to my aunt and my grandmother. Since I was little I was always involved in the world of sports with the support of family. I played basketball then I moved to handball, soccer, pelota Vasca, swimming. I know you might wonder why I am here in Albany coming from Miami and it is pretty simple. My partner got a job here and we had to move. So far I have really loved it. People are very nice even with my English.
Q: What was your experience level with athletics prior to CrossFit?
Kat: In 2010 I started playing Rugby with a local team in my city and in 2014 I was called to train with the Venezuelan national team. This was a great honor for me, I have always liked to work hard for what I want, and when playing rugby, I put all my effort to belong to the national team and be able to stay at that level. I played for the National team for 7 years, I participated in many international tournaments and we put Venezuelan rugby at a higher level than it had ever been before. The last two years I was selected as captain. I can say that rugby shaped me as a person and as an athlete. In 2018 I was selected to play professional rugby in Brazil ( they have the best level in South America) so I lived there for 8 months. It was like a dream come true for me.
Q: How long have you been coaching CrossFit?
Kat: It is hard to say because when I started CrossFit it was just to get better at Rugby and when I went to Brazil my friends saw that I had really improved my conditioning and they wanted the same. We just wanted to be explosive, faster and stronger but noticed that you really need good technique in order to do all of this without getting injured. I decided to start doing small courses about personal training, programming. I was not thinking that I want to be a coach, I just want to help the team. It wasn’t until I went to Miami and I started working in a CrossFit gym when I realized that I would like to learn more about how to teach people and how to help my own performance. In 2020 I did my level 1 with CF and then I started doing small sessions, especially as a personal trainer. Now that I am here with you guys ( Aevitas Fitness ) I am hoping to learn more about how to coach a group class and am already thinking of taking the CrossFit Level 2
Q: Why did you get into coaching and what do you enjoy most about it?
Kat: One of the things that made me go into coaching was to help myself improve doing CF and to be able to understand a little more about the sport. Then people started asking me tips and how to do this and how to do that and I felt that what I was doing was really good and I was having a good time. I really enjoy the energy in the group class, the opportunity of being part of this wellness community where we are “all the same”…. all of us have some good days and bad days but at the end we are here trying to be better. We all have that in common. I have learned so many things since I started coaching. How to be patient with others and most importantly, how to separate myself from the athlete mentality and think like a coach
Q: What attracted you to Aevitas?
Kat: I think it is the variety of coaches that Aevitas has. To see so many different types of coaches with a lot of experiences and a lot of different ways to coach. I am super excited to learn from each of them. Also, everyone has been so nice since day one that has made me very happy and has made me gain confidence faster.
Q: Favorite CrossFit movement and why?
Kat: Heavy ( for me ) Hang squat clean. I do know why, maybe I do it well. And I love the kind of workout when you have to mix cardio with heavy lifts.
Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement and why?
Kat: I don’t think that I have one. Could be rowing.
Q: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of CrossFit?
Kat: Well, It depends on the mood and where I am. I do not have a specific activity to do. I just like to do many things. In Miami I used to go to the beach and do some indoor climbing. Also, I like hiking. Now here in NY I am not sure what new things I am going to do…probably more hiking. Also, I started playing Squash so let’s see how that goes.
Q: Favorite movie?
Kat: Hard. I really like to watch TV. I do not have just one favorite movie.
La La Land
Batman The dark knight Trilogy
Q: You recently moved here from Miami….what has been the biggest adjustment to living in upstate NY?
Kat: When I lived in Miami I was surrounded by many Hispanics. It was easy to feel that you were not in the United States. Now I am here and am excited to learn more about this country and its culture. Finally I will see 4 full seasons of the year.
