Meet Leyla

Leyla Kiosse has been an athlete with us at CrossFit ÆVITAS for several months now.  Her incredible work ethic and sense of competitiveness have helped her achieve some amazing things so far in her time with us – including her first rope climb just last week!  We asked Leyla to write up a little bit about herself, so that the ÆVITAS community can get to know her a little better.  Here’s what she had to say:

My day job is being a lawyer. I practice in Guilderland with my law partner (Margaret Tabak) at Tabak & Kiosse, LLP. My area of expertise is matrimonial and family law. Not surprisingly, being a lawyer (and self-employed) is very stressful. Every day is a challenge.

Although I always turned to exercise to help alleviate stress, two years ago I stopped exercising regularly. I really don’t know why this happened. I began having trouble sleeping. My insomnia got so bad that my doctor prescribed sleeping pills. This was a wake-up call for me (no pun intended!). I was not going to become another person dependent upon medication to get through my day. So in March 2013, I made a commitment to return to daily exercise at my gym. I also decided to toss certain foods from my diet that I view as “zero-return” foods (such as soda, which I have not had in 16 months). As a result, my sleep pattern returned to normal and I was in a better mood overall.

In December 2013, I turned to Crossfit because I wanted to see what the hype (good and bad) was all about. I also really liked the inclusion of weight lifting because that was something I enjoyed and wanted to do more of. I had heard positive things about Crossfit Aevitas and joined boot camp. I’m really glad that I did! The intensity of Crossfit is perfect for me because the stress of daily life disappears when I am in “the box”. Crossfit forces me to be focused on the task at hand. When I’m trying to learn how to throw weights overhead there is simply no room in my brain for “work thoughts” to creep in. When I’m home you can usually find me in my kitchen (or in my gardens in the summer). I love food and cooking. I’m fortunate that my long-time boyfriend (Levi Steier) is also an excellent cook. We have a lot of fun creating new recipes and trying new foods. We are also both working members of the Honest Weight Food Co-Op. You can find us there every Sunday in the bulk department.

Leyla and Levi both teach cooking classes at the Honest Weight Food Co-op!  We will keep you posted on their next appearances!
