Q: Hi Jackie, tell us a little about yourself (where did you grow up? where do you live now? family? what you do for a living? etc).

Jackie: I’m a mom, farmer’s wife and a scientist.  Alan and I have been married for almost 20 years (crazy, right?!) and we have 3 girls (Elizabeth (16), Annie (10) and Natalie (6)).  Our girls are the 9th generation to live and work on our family farm in Berne.  Farm life is great and it keeps us very busy. I am also a scientist at the Department of Environmental Conservation. I work on all issues related to clean water – making sure we all have safe water to drink and play in.  Protecting open-space is an important way that my DEC work and farm life intersect. It’s important to me (and to our planet!) that we don’t build houses on every piece of open land.

Q: What was your experience level with athletics prior to CrossFit?

J: I have always led an active life.  In high school I was on the Jr. National team for flatwater spring kayaking; allowing me to train and compete all over the country with my K2 partner Amy (yup, she’s an Aevitan too).  I even got to participate in the Olympic trials for the ’96 Games (the original Games) – I didn’t make it (not close!) but I got to go and watch the Games in Atlanta. GO USA!

Q: How long have you been doing CrossFit?

J: I am proud to say that I am a founding member of Crossfit Aevitas.  I was there on day 1 in the park with this crazy guy named Chad and his silent girlfriend, Karen.

Q: What is your favorite thing about CrossFit and CrossFit Aevitas?

J: This is hard to nail down because there are so many things that keep me at Aevitas.  I love that everyone is kind; that we compete fiercely during the WOD but that nobody cares if you win or lose after it’s over.  I love that it is a professional space with real knowledge and science behind what we are doing but that it isn’t so serious that it takes the fun out of it.  I love that people notice when I’m not there and reach out to make sure the universe isn’t being too hard on me. I love that we celebrate each-others’ small victories together and support each other when times are tough.  I love that you are supposed to fail and that that failure means you have succeeded because you tried (does that make sense?).

Q: What is your favorite CrossFit movement and why?

J: Burpees – always.  Burpees fix everything!

Q: How about your least favorite CrossFit movement and why?

J: Thrusters.  Why are they so hard?!

Q: Which is the most memorable WOD/workout and why?

J: I’m not generally attached to particular WODs; we all remember the bad days (hello broken pinky finger!) – I do love the birthday burpees that we do for each other.  Again, just a small way to be good human beings to each other – that’s important to me.

Q: In what areas have you improved the most since you began doing CrossFit?

J: I started at Aevitas when my youngest was just a baby.  I had just survived an extremely difficult pregnancy and was still trying to get my colicky baby to sleep at night.  CF helped me re-connect with my love of barbells and pullups while also respecting my need do metabolic conditioning that doesn’t always involve running.  Through CF I was able to regain my confidence in what my body could handle physically but also to discover a new level of mental toughness that serves me well in all aspects of my life.

Q: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of CrossFit?

J: I love cross-country skiing.  Even if we only get a dusting of snow, you’ll find me doing laps around the edges of the pasture just enjoying being outside.   I also love to read “beach novels” – simple stories with happy endings make me smile.

Q: Describe your happy place…..imaginary or real

J: Spending a day on the tractor in a hay field, under a huge blue sky, knowing I’m doing important work but also getting to just enjoy being in such a special place.

Q: What is your dream job, aside from the one you have currently?

J: Farmer – for sure.  Retirement plans…..
