Our CrossFit Aevitas family is full of the most amazing people! This Aevitas Athlete Spotlight segment is all about Michelle Mora, aka Mighty Mouse. If you don’t know Michelle yet (stop and chat with her at our front desk anytime!), this should give you a peek into who she is, and why we decided to spotlight her! If you do know Michelle already, keep reading – you might learn something that you didn’t know before!
Question: Hi Michelle, tell everyone a little bit about yourself (where you live, family, what you do for a living, etc)
Michelle:I wear many hats and I love them all equally. I am a student, crossfitter, teacher, academic advisor, gym greeter, professional dog snuggler and lover of excel sheets.
I live exactly three miles from CrossFit Aevitas and 2.5 miles from my mom (AKA Rosa!). I live smack in between two of my favorite things.
I spend 40 hours a week at the University at Albany. I am an academic advisor for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. I love my job. I get to work with undergraduate students every day. They drive me crazy but they also bring me coffee and chocolate when they know I’m upset. I have the best job in the entire world.
Q: What was your experience level with athletics prior to CrossFit?
M: I was the best bench warmer around! Seriously! I was TERRIBLE at every sport but enjoyed being on a team. My job was to cheer on my teammates 🙂 I took on that role proudly.
In 2008-2009, I had the crazy idea of running a full marathon. I trained for a full year and completed my first (and only) marathon in Albany in October 2009. This is one of my favorite accomplishments.
Q: You are also a serious weightlifter. Tell us about when and how you got involved in this sport, and what your goals are.
M: I started lifting last year when Chad started the Weightlifting club. I wanted to be better at CrossFit, which meant my lifts needed to get better. Then I realized, “wow, I am pretty good at this!” For the first time, I felt like an athlete.
My goal is to lift in the USAW American Open Series. It is a scary and intimidating goal but I want to lift on the same platform as the amazing women I admire.
Q: How long have you been doing CrossFit?
M: I joined CrossFit in 2011 when my brother, Michael, was deployed in Afghanistan. He always wanted to try CrossFit and I promised him I would check it out while he was gone. I went to my first one-on-one session in Clifton Park and never looked back!
When my brother got back from deployment, he joined CrossFit and he got his first muscle up in bootcamp… I was bitter.
Q: What is your favorite thing about CrossFit and CrossFit Aevitas?
M: Favorite thing about CrossFit: There’s always room for improvement. I love training with people that are focused on improvement, not perfection.
Favorite thing about Aevitas: Chad was the first coach EVER to compliment me on my athletic ability. I will never forget that day. I was fresh out of bootcamp at Albany CrossFit and we were lifting in the class. He looked at me (with no smile, no expression) and said “You have great form.” It made my day. Now, 6 years later, here I am at Aevitas with Chad and Karen holdin’ down the nook!
Aevitas was the first place where coaches saw potential in me. At Aevitas, all members are seen as athletes with endless potential and we are all treated equally.
Q: Favorite CrossFit movement and why?
M: Seriously? No brainer! SNATCH AND CLEAN AND JERK. Olympic lifts are pretty, technical, difficult, and rewarding.
Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement and why?
M: Rowing. I. Hate. Rowing. So. Much. I don’t know why. I’ve hated it ever since bootcamp. Can we just run instead?
Q: Most memorable WOD/workout and why?
M: Memorial Day Murph, 2016. Lauren Anderson shared her story about her brother and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Every day, I am so thankful my brother isn’t a memory. I think of her and her family every time we do a hero WOD.
Q: What’s better, catching a heavy snatch perfectly, or stringing 10 butterfly pullups together?
M: SNATCH SNATCH SNATCH
Q: In what areas have you improved the most since you began at CrossFit Aevitas?
M: My attitude. I used to take this stuff so seriously. The athletes at the Aevitas constantly remind me that we do this for fun… we do this to be fit… we do this to be better. We do our best and forget the rest.
Q: Last one: What is your favorite music to workout to?
M: MISTA 305! Pitbull! Dale!
