Even if you already know her, keep reading – you might learn something that you didn’t know before!
Question: Hi Elena, tell us a little about yourself (where did you grow up? where do you live now? family? etc).
Elena: I grew up in Cairo (care-o…haha), NY surrounded by pretty much all of my immediate family from my mom’s and dad’s side which I am very thankful for, and have lived there all my life just before moving up here in the Albany area. I currently live with Chad and Karen (huge shoutout) and their dogs Annie + Ruby :). I have a younger brother named Lucas who is 17.
Q: What was your experience level with athletics prior to CrossFit?
Elena: The bulk of my athletics were outside of school sports. Before CrossFit, I did gymnastics in Saugerties for about 3 years and that’s where my athletics pretty much started. After that, I transitioned into competitive cheerleading for 5 years. I did it for my first 2 years in Saugerties where I did gymnastics, and then my last 3 years in Albany at CNY Storm. I was on a Level 5 worlds team and we traveled the country to compete at all different competitions.
Q: How long have you been coaching CrossFit?
Elena: I have been coaching CrossFit for a little over 3 years now.
Q: Why did you get into coaching and what do you enjoy most about it?
Elena: I got into coaching CrossFit soon after joining and seeing how much it had changed my life in multiple ways. I knew early on that being a role model and having a positive impact on people of all ages was very important to me. Experiencing that on a daily basis now is what makes me so grateful to have the job that I do. I believe that I am meant to help others see and become the best versions of themselves and I get to do that for people through CrossFit.
Q: What attracted you to Aevitas-CRL?
Elena: What attracted me to Aevitas-CRL was the goal and mission behind what the gyms represent. Chad and Karen’s passion about continually building a space that is focused on the health and longevity of everyone who comes in the door is definitely contagious. They have created such a positive, drama-free, and accepting of all atmosphere, which I love.
Q: Favorite CrossFit movement and why?
Elena: Handstand walking without a doubt! Coming from a gymnastics/cheerleading background I was so used to being upside down on my hands so now that is like second nature for me :). Funny story when I was younger and went grocery shopping with my mom, I always used to walk around the stores in a handstand versus on my feet to see how long/far I could walk.
Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement and why?
Elena: Least favorite is probably a deadlift. My hinge to squat ratio is a work in progress but slowly getting better.
Q: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of coaching CF?
Elena: Haha, I don’t have many ‘hobbies’ outside of CF, but my main focus right now outside of coaching is being a competitive athlete in this sport, so much of what I do outside of ‘CrossFit’ is to help me enhance my performance and training inside of the gym. Other than that, I love exploring and experiencing new coffee shops in the area and reading/writing/learning there.
Q: Favorite movie?
Elena: This isn’t a movie, but a TV series so hopefully it counts, but I love Friends 🙂
Q: You are going to be competing at an upcoming CrossFit Games Sanctional Event in February….Wodapalooza. How have you adjusted your training to prepare?
Elena: Yes! So grateful for the opportunity to go to WZA. My training volume has gone significantly up these last 6 weeks for my ‘accumulation phase’. Now I am headed into my ‘intensification phase’ for the next 6 weeks where volume will go down but intensity will go up. I also switched up my training/rest days to get my body used to the actual days I will be competing when I go! Other than that, I swim once a week with a swim coach to prepare for the swim event that I’ll have.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to tell the Aevitas-CRL community about yourself?
Elena: I honestly just want to give a huge shoutout to Chad, Karen, Sam, Aevitas + Round Lake for giving me the opportunity to do what I love at two really great gyms . THANK YOU for accepting me into your lives and I am so grateful and excited to continue this journey with you all! 🙂
