Our Aevitas Fitness family is full of the most amazing people! This Aevitas Athlete Spotlight segment is all about Lisa Better, who works out at Aevitas Guilderland.
If you don’t know Lisa yet, this should give you a peek into who she is, and why we decided to spotlight her! If you do know her already, you know that she is not very shy and is super strong. Even if you already know her, keep reading – you might learn something that you didn’t know before!
Question: Hi Lisa, tell us a little about yourself (where did you grow up? where do you live now? family? career? etc).
Lisa: I grew up in Long Island and moved to Buffalo for college. From there I started my trek back home, moving to Syracuse and then to Albany. I currently live in GUILDERLAND with my husband Craig and 5 kids….. Isabelle, Riley, Evan, Juliana, and Avery as well as our dog Charlie. I work as a Nurse Practitioner with Landmark Heath doing home care and LOVE what I do!! Prior to Landmark I worked at New York Oncology and Hematology for 5 years and piloted a palliative care program for our patients.
Q: What was your experience level with athletics and exercise prior to joining Aevitas?
Lisa: Prior to Aevitas, I did different things like Zumba, boot camps and just managed a household of 5 kids!
Q: How long have you been a member at Aevitas?
Lisa: Wow, I think it has been about 5 years now??? I remember the first day I walked into the gym, curious about what I was seeing, and had my first interaction with Karen who told me “you should come by and try it”……. needless to say I did, and became addicted!!!
Q: What is your favorite thing about Aevitas?
Lisa: It’s hard to say only one thing…… the Coaches are so encouraging and supportive of your goals. The community of Aevitans doesn’t just occur in the gym but outside the gym as well. I have made some truly great friends who are so supportive and not only make me stronger but also make me laugh!!
Q: Favorite movement we do at the gym and why?
Lisa: My favorite movement is a toss-up between Handstand push-ups and double-unders…… I never claim to be the best at these but I do love gymnastics-type movements.
Q: Least favorite movement you do at the gym and why?
Lisa: RUNNING!!!!!!! Because my body only allows one speed….. SLOW! But I will say this……. I still force myself to run if it’s in the workout.
Q: What skill/ability are you hoping to improve on?
Lisa: Anything on the rig especially pull-ups and toes to bar……. my grip seems to one of my issues and I hope to correct it and work on getting that first strict pull-up and toes to bar soon!
Q: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of the gym?
Lisa: Outside of the gym I love being active and outdoors. I love camping, kayaking, hiking, biking, sewing, baking and anything that involves my kids.
Q: When the gym was closed during the early months of the pandemic, you posted a video of yourself doing one of the at-home WODs. That video, to say the least, became an instant Aevitas classic moment. For those who haven’t seen the video, could you walk us through what happened?
Lisa: It was an at-home workout with weighted lunges, so I had my kid on my back for the weight. My dog Charlie also decided to join me for the workout, and I stupidly thought he would just be cute like the dogs you see in videos, and sit next to me while I worked……
Well my dog had other plans, thought it would be funny to apparently hump me mid workout, so I had to keep shaking him off of me while trying to continue doing lunges with a kid on my back.
He was scheduled to be neutered only a few weeks later. Apparently, it was not soon enough! Lol!! He has since been neutered and doesn’t “interrupt” me anymore.
Q: In one word, how would your family describe you to the rest of us?
Q: Favorite music to WOD to?
Lisa: 80’s and 90’s music and anything Dave Edelson plays…… he has some good tunes going!!
Lisa, thanks so much for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with the rest of us. We are so happy to have you in our community!
