Question: Hi Ethan, tell us a little about yourself (where did you grow up? where do you live now? family? etc).
Ethan: I spent my childhood split between Massachusetts and Berne, NY. Currently I live in East Greenbush with my wife Shannon, our 4-month old daughter Madison, our 1 ½ year old Pitbull named Nala and an 8 year old cat named Benton.
Q: What was your experience level with athletics prior to CrossFit?
Ethan Prior to CrossFit I was a competitive runner. I primarily ran cross country, but also ran distance events in track and field.
Q: How long have you been coaching CrossFit?
Ethan: I have been coaching CrossFit specifically for the last 3 ½ years.
Q: Why did you get into coaching and what do you enjoy most about it?
Ethan I was the head trainer at the Bethlehem YMCA when I found CrossFit in late 2015. I started using the CrossFit methodology with my clients and fell in love with it myself. I started coaching at a local affiliate soon thereafter. My favorite thing about coaching is the people. Each athlete comes to the table with different strengths and weaknesses, so it’s fun to figure out what everyone needs. Everyone’s a puzzle, the pieces aren’t always obvious but the challenge is fun.
Q: What attracted you to Aevitas?
Ethan The members and the coaching staff primarily. Chad and Karen have created a place where coaches can really express themselves and their talents. The members have all been super open and helpful in my transition from my former job to Aevitas. That’s been a huge bonus. You never know how you’ll be received when walking into someone’s else’s house but everyone has made it so easy and comfortable.
Q: Favorite CrossFit movement and why?
Ethan: Bar muscle up. I can make them smooth and it makes me feel like I’m flying for a moment if I’ve executed them correctly.
Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement and why?
Ethan: Dumbbell box step-overs. Awkward. Functional but awkward.
Q: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of Aevitas?
Ethan: Outside of coaching and working out, I spend most of my time hanging out with my daughter Madison. I’m a Brooklyn Nets fan, so I watch as many games as I can. I’m also a huge nerd…..Star Wars. Lord of the Rings etc. As far as hobbies? Not a ton. I love CrossFit, so when I’m not coaching I’m working out.
Q: Favorite singer/band?
Ethan I listen to just about anything, but Pearl Jam would have to be my favorite. Grunge in general as a genre.
Q: What has surprised you so far as a new dad?
Ethan: kid can eat… she makes me proud haha. It’s funny how expressive she gets at only 4 months old. We have staring contests all the time. She can’t take her eyes off of me and I can’t take my eyes off of her. I always blink first. I always lose. I don’t know if that’s surprising but it’s what stands out.
